Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any significant honors show nears, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
