Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying such medications must be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural support.
