British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
